MSI is well positioned to work with both formal and informal educational stakeholders interested in partnering together. Dr. Stovall served as Mathematician and Director of STEM Youth and School Programs at The Franklin Institute (TFI) – a premier science center working with motivated youth across the greater Philadelphia region. As a result of TFI’s founding partnership of the innovative, project-based, high school Science Leadership Academy (SLA), piloting of the Woodard Program connecting TFI to Penn, and its extensive network nationally, and internationally, Dr. Stovall was invited to the White House to participate in the 1st STEM Mentoring Symposium as part of President Obama’s US2020 Initiative to recruit, organize, resource, and plan the mobilization of one million STEM professionals across all working sectors to mentor youth nationally.

MSI Partners

UNCF

In 2016, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) partnered with MSI to develop UNCF’s Virtual STEM Platform. MSI Programming – Summer Bridge to College with Academic Year Enrichment & Support – was bolted onto UNCF’s STEM Scholars Program (SSP) funded by the Fund II Foundation and maintained via the Virtual STEM Platform. Thus, connecting MSI’s national network of African American mathematical scientists as support for the empowerment of high achieving African American undergraduates pursuing STEM + Entrepreneurship at top-notch universities across the country.

To date: over 400 SSP Scholars, 91% retention rate in STEM. During Academic Year 2019-20 there was a 40% increase (on average) for SSP Scholars confidence who were tutored by MSI. 75% of SSP Scholars came back for more MSI wrap-around services. There was an average increase of 37% from pre to post assessments (achievement) for SSP Scholars during MSI Summer Bridge Programming in 2018 & 2019.

The UNCF-MSI Partnership provides a model for effective use of scalable distance-learning technology to create a virtual environment that is student-centered, data-based, and laden with wrap-around services, enrichments, and supports for 21st century training and education.

DEbT-M MATH PROJECT

Designing for Equity by Thinking in and about Mathematics (DEbT-M), is a community of mathematical teaching practice devoted to closing the opportunity gap for marginalized secondary mathematics students in Pittsburgh. Core Partners in DEbT-M are the Education Development Center (EDC) as the lead, and the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS), the University of Pittsburgh (PITT), and the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

PROGRAMS

The Woodard Program

The Dudley Weldon Woodard Program for Excellence in Mathematical Sciences, known as the “Woodard Program” is a means of plumbing a “talent pipeline” to create a mentoring and supportive community around the mathematical sciences to increase the number of young people from underrepresented minority (URM) groups earning advanced degrees, careers and leadership positions in the mathematical sciences.

During its pilot year (AY2014/15), the Woodard Program connected undergraduate students at Penn (Woodard Scholars & Math 499 students) to high school students from The Franklin Institute Youth Programs (STEM Scholars Program & Partnerships for Achieving Careers in Technology and Science (PACTS)) for mutual academic enrichment and community building.

SAGE Program

This program is designed to empower students to overcome the inevitable obstacles that they will encounter on their journey to success by sharing stories of industry professional’s ups and downs.
